Mojácar Markets and Festivals: 2026 Events Guide

Mojácar combines tradition, celebration and village life like few places on the Mediterranean. Its annual calendar includes weekly markets for local produce, festivals with centuries of history and cultural events that attract thousands of visitors. This guide covers everything you need to know to plan your trip and not miss a thing.

📑 Table of contents

Local public holidays in 2026 are 12 June (Moors and Christians) and 28 August (San Agustin).

Markets and Shopping

Wednesday Market

Every Wednesday from 9:00 to 14:00 at Plaza Rey Alabez, next to the football ground. With around 40 stalls, this is the main market in Mojácar. You will find clothing, footwear, fruit and vegetables from the local farmlands, honey, spices, olive oil and fresh flowers.

Prices are good, especially for local produce. Arrive early for the best fruit and vegetables. From noon the stalls start packing up. Bring cash as most vendors do not accept cards.

Sunday Antiques Market

Sundays from 9:00 to 14:00, at the entrance to the village next to the community centre, there is an antiques and bric-a-brac market. Smaller than the Wednesday market but with its own character. After browsing, take the opportunity to walk up into the village and have a coffee in one of the small squares.

Summer Craft Market

From July to September a craft market sets up along the promenade in Mojácar Playa. Local handicrafts, jewellery, ceramics and gourmet products in a relaxed seaside atmosphere. A good plan for an evening stroll after dinner.

Artisan Shops in Mojácar Pueblo

The Jewish quarter of the old town has several workshops and traditional craft shops open year-round. Here you will find jarapas (traditional Alpujarran weavings), esparto grass work, hand-decorated ceramics, leather goods and wrought iron pieces. These are unique items you will not find in any shopping centre.

2026 Festival Calendar

Winter and Spring

#### Carnival (13-18 February)

Mojácar celebrates Carnival with parades, satirical song groups (chirigotas) and plenty of fancy dress. A festive week that livens up the quieter months of the year.

#### Holy Week (29 March - 5 April)

Two brotherhoods organise the processions that wind through the steep alleyways of the village. Palm Sunday stands out for the procession of palms on donkey-back, a scene full of character. Holy Thursday features the Procession of the Encounter. The religious floats being carried through the narrow streets of the old town have a visual quality that is hard to find elsewhere.

#### San Isidro Pilgrimage (around 17 May)

Flower-decorated carts accompany the patron saint of farmers on a pilgrimage to the hamlet of Sopalmo. Afterwards, a communal outdoor meal. A very local and authentic celebration.

Summer

**The big festival of Mojácar.** Held since 1988 under the motto "Without vanquished or victors", commemorating the historic pact between the Moorish governor Alabez and the Catholic Monarchs. For four days the town transforms with period costume parades, historical re-enactments and firework displays. 12 June is a local public holiday.

Coinciding with the festival, Plaza Nueva and Calle Glorieta host the Moorish Medieval Market: artisan stalls, jugglers and troubadours, falconry displays and knight combat shows. A journey back in time in the heart of the old town.

If you are visiting in June, try to time your trip for this festival. Book accommodation months in advance as Mojácar fills up completely.

#### Night of San Juan (23-24 June)

The most magical night of summer, free and held at Playa del Descargador. The programme starts at 18:00 with children's activities. At 22:00 the children's bonfire is lit. At midnight, the main bonfire, fireworks and music. Tradition says you should jump over the flames and swim in the sea at twelve to start summer on the right foot.

Bring something for dinner, drinks and a blanket. The first part of the evening is family-friendly; the early hours are more for younger crowds.

#### Romantic Night (around 27 June)

Since 2017, Mojácar has taken part in this initiative by the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain network. Each square in the old town has live music, and at midnight there is a collective kiss in the Plaza Mayor. A charming event.

#### Sopalmo Festivities (early August)

The hamlet of Sopalmo celebrates its festivities in honour of Cristo Rey with the traditional ribbon race on horseback. A rural and authentic atmosphere.

#### San Agustin Festival (around 24-28 August)

**The patron saint festivities.** San Agustin is the patron saint of Mojácar and 28 August is a local public holiday. The programme includes an opening speech, ribbon races on horseback at La Fuente, the traditional "Subida del Agua" (women in traditional dress carry water pitchers from the fountain up to the church), the patron saint procession, concerts and open-air dances until the early hours.

They coincide with peak tourist season, so a great atmosphere is guaranteed.

Autumn and Winter

#### Night of the Candles (around 20 September)

**One of the most spectacular events of the year.** Running since 2013, with over 15,000 attendees in recent editions. All public street lighting is switched off and more than 7,000 candles illuminate the historic centre. A giant moon installation is set up in Plaza Nueva. There is live music, drumming parades through the streets and telescopes at the Castle Viewpoint for stargazing. A truly unique experience.

#### Mojácar 5 Estrellas Festival (around 3-5 October)

Second edition of this festival combining music and haute cuisine. Michelin-starred chefs such as Angel Leon (Aponiente, 3 stars) and Cristobal Munoz (Amvibium, 1 star) feature in the programme. Days 3 and 5 have free programming.

#### Christmas (November - January)

Christmas lights are switched on 29 November with an event drawing over 7,000 people (Mojácar was a Ferrero Rocher Village). 20 December brings a Christmas market. 31 December features a Children's New Year's Eve celebration, and on 5 January the Three Kings Parade winds through the village.

Practical Tips

For major events (Moors and Christians, Night of the Candles, San Agustin), book accommodation in advance. Mojácar fills up and prices rise.

At the markets, bring cash and reusable bags. Haggling is not common at food stalls but is acceptable, in moderation, at clothing and accessories stalls.

For up-to-date information on dates and programmes, check the Mojácar Town Hall website or the information boards along the promenade.
